This story, which was as renowned in the 19th century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the 20th, inspired Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby-Dick and captured the nation’s imagination with the struggle of the ship’s remaining crew members as they fought to survive the unrelenting perils of the sea.
